A scroll containing following story was brought to mine doorstep:
The shadows cast forth by the massive bulk of Golgotha engulfed the
surrounding desolate landscape of the Isle of Deceit. Nothing grew there on
that freezing mass north of Moonglow. Some would blame the cold temperatures
but those in the know were aware that the true reason nothing grew was the
presence of the Ebon Skull. Its evil essence summoned hordes of Undead from
the nearby Dungeon of Deceit. Its call bound them to its purpose, the spread
of Entropy and the feeding of Oblivion. Even the few natural predators of the
land answered its keening. They acknowledged and accepted the greater predator
by instinct. This isle was now the possession of the Order of the Ebon Skull.
On rare occasions the creatures of Chaos, the Orcs, would attack the Tower of
Skulls but they always fell to the creatures of Entropy. None of the
inhabitants left alive could pose a threat to their cause.
Azalin the Lichlord sat within Golgotha and communed with the forces of
Oblivion that were channeled through the Ebon Skull. Both the Ebon Skull and
the Lichlord were pleased with their minion's progress. In short time they had
conquered this land. They had also set forth many bastions of evil throughout
the realm such as the Sepulchre of the Damned and the Unholy Sanctum of Death
and Decay. Slowly but surely the decay of Entropy was spreading throughout the
Shard. The only major obstacle being the physical conflicts with the Lost
Order of Akalabeth and the preaching of the Virtues by the Apostles of the
Avatar. No other guild or group stood in their way. More and more the common
folk realized that the virtues are indeed false and hold no merit in the
realities of life. The light shining from the Shard of Akalabeth grows dimmer
each day and the mortals defending its cause grow more confused every day as
their precious holy Shard fails to banish the Darkness that spreads forth from
the Ebon Skull.
The time was ripe. The Order of the Ebon Skull gained strength each passing
week. More and more of the Undead and Necromancers came to Golgotha seeking
the blessings of Oblivion. Now was the time to erect the Necropolis. A city
for the Undead and other creatures of Entropy and Oblivion. The undertaking
would be difficult but the rewards reaped would be vast.
Azalin summoned the servants of Oblivion via the Ebon Skull and waited.
Golgotha pulsed with dark energy. Only those with the mystical sight could
view the ley lines of entropic force spreading in every direction over the
horizon, encompassing the Shard in their complex webs. In droves came the
twisted mockeries of life. Death Knights, Wraiths, Vampires, Daemons even
Liches and Balrogs attended the siren call. Necromancers and Priests felt the
beckoning and used their dark magicks to rush to their master's summons. Even
those at the Necromancy Institute far, far way felt the powerful surge of
Entropy and left their dusty tomes to seek and unravel this new mystery.
Once satisfied that the majority of evil in the Shard was in attendance,
Azalin stood upon the top of Golgotha and conveyed the wishes of the Ebon
Skull to the dark masses below.
"Greetings my Progeny and other servants of Darkness and Entropy. 'Tis the
time for us all to unite and present to this Shard what Evil truly means." The
Lichlord stated, cold light shining from deep within the sockets of his skull.
"The forces of Light have built cities and villages such as the town
Rivendale and the village of the Lost Order of Akalabeth. Such things cannot
go unchecked by the forces of Darkness. The lawless village of Buccaneer's Den
does nothing for our goals. 'Tis only an open battlefield for the ruffians of
the world and the vigilantes who seek glory by slaying the ruffians. We are in
need of a truly evil construct one that will rival the cities of the False
King, not some hamlet on a far way isle. As we join under one banner, that of
Oblivion, we shall pool all of our resources together to make this dark vision
a reality."
Guttural cheering and rasping voices of agreement rose up towards the
Lichlord. Azalin raised his skeletal arms and called forth the power of the
Ebon Skull. Black light shot forth from the Sanctum Sanctorum as the dark
artifact rose through the roof and hovered above the crowd of monstrosities.
"'Tis time for the Ebon Skull to transport us to the site of our grandest
endeavor, the Yew Tombs. There we shall build our Necropolis and with it we
shall attract all the evil in the land to our cause. We shall promote the
Sins, teach Necromancy and other Dark Arts and provide other services for the
common public. In doing so we shall entangle them in our webs and indebt their
souls to Oblivion."
With an incantation in a tongue that no living creature could manage Azalin
invoked the power of the Ebon Skull. Black storm clouds funneled around
Golgotha casting lightning every which way. A huge black moongate, easily
forty paces wide and seventy paces tall erupted from the cold hard ground in
front of the Tower of Skulls. On the other side of the gate could be seen the
lowly forms of Undead, Skeletons and Zombies, such creatures lacked the
intelligence to sense the call of the Ebon Skull.
The horde moved as one through the black moongate and emerged on the other
side to begin their task. Eventually when the last Death Knight on his
Nightmare rode through, the gate closed. The storm clouds eased their cycling
and the lightning damped its torrent on the landscape. The Ebon Skull sunk
back within the Sanctum Sanctorum and the black light stopped its flaring and
became the ever-present glow that it normally was. Azalin stood overlooking
the dead land before him and began to chuckle.
"This is merely the beginning of the end Britannia," stated the Lichlord.
"Take shelter in your cozy towns and hamlets for a new city shall emerge. Its
creation heralds your destruction."
And with that the Lichlord opened his own personal black moongate and stepped
over to the Yew Tombs where his Progeny awaited.
