The new Regent of Britannia! - |
It was with great anticipation that the crowd flooded into the sadly neglected Throne Room in the Royal Palace of Britannia, eager to see if the talk on the streets was indeed true and a new dawn was about to break over the war torn lands of Britannia. For many months the rumours had been rife, Lord British, absent for so long, had at last heard the pleading voices of the haggard masses, worn down by the continual warfare and near to giving up all hope. At last he had apparently taken action, for tonight there was to be the first public appearance of none other than Barahir Netanve, the new Regent of Britannia!
Into the throne room they came streaming and were not to be disappointed for there, standing before the Sovereign’s Throne, stood a tall and distinguished looking nobleman, flanked by guards, the new Regent himself. He greeted the crowd cordially and began his address by telling us about his appointment by the hand of none other than Lord British himself, and how he would do his utmost to heal the rifts that tore at the realm, bring the warring factions together and forging a new future from the many divergent communities of the land. He spoke of the pitiless trials and tribulations that tested the peoples of Britannia, how the never ending war cut down the young men of the realm, how the mayhem at the banks clearly demonstrated the wrecked and desperate state of the economy, and how the simple folk of the land suffered with not enough food for their tables nor clothing for their frightened children. He pledged to levy an army to wage unremitting war against the Orcs that plagued the town of Cove. He called on the leaders of all the towns and cities to unit in a new alliance of national unity, that they might raise up as one and smite the evil that plagues the land, the forces of Minax, the rampaging Orc hordes, the newly emboldened Drow houses and the wicked forces that creep unknown still from the shadows. He spoke of the great teachings of the Virtues and how they can give us all strength in these troubled times. Even the appearance of evil men and drow warriors at the back of the crowded hall did not dampen his spirit nor dull his inspired words.
The people listened, some crying out their support, others more cautious, the memory of Lord British’s own failures still fresh in their minds as were the gaping wounds upon their own flesh. Too long had the realm drifted rudderless and scepticism was thick in the air, mingling with desperate hope in a heady cocktail of uncertainty about our collective future. Sensing the mood of the crowd, the Regent turned to those he recognised, one after the other, introducing first Kulgan of Moonglow, his new Court Treasurer, then greeting Videric Gavestone, Trader of Minoc and Elliot, commander of the Vesper Militia. They spoke of their shared hopes for the future even as others questioned his role and asked about that other famous exile of Britannia, Lord Blackthorn, pointing out that there might indeed be other philosophies to consider rather than simple blind adherence to the rule of Lord British, who many feel had so sorely neglected this sorrowful realm.
As for myself, I stepped forward and spoke of the town of Spiritwood, so long a beacon of hope and freedom in this troubled land. I pointed out that the Skara Brae region, of which fair Spiritwood is a proud part, has for long basked in a relative freedom from the harsh dictate of the Britannian court, how it jealously guards it independence and how many share a discontent with the absentee rule of a King, whom many feel has abandoned the simple folk of the land to the tender mercies of the minions of destruction. My own noble order, the Custodes Fati, and many others like us have long ago stepped selflessly into the breach left by the King’s absence and defended the innocents of the realm, and now feel uncertain about relinquishing our independence to a monarchy many believe has lost touch with the true values of its subjects. A consummate politician, Barahir Netanve assured me that our views would not fall on deaf ears and he kindly agreed to my invitation to come to Spiritwood and sit in consultation with the local leaders to hear our grievances and to thence “negotiate” an agreeable conclusion.
We look forward to such a visitation to our territory and feel sure that it shall be the first of many as the new Regent of Britannia consolidates his position and takes the first strides towards healing the many rifts that split the realm.

Report on the Cove attack. - |
It seams that the attack was false alarm. If it wasnt, i must say this was a poor planned invasion by them orcs. I spent a evening at the Cove gate, and what i and others could see, were not more then four to five of them orcs running around. But they were quickly removed.
For now its clam, just afew orc scouts and orc choppers wandering the woods around. But i do belive this might become bigger. We have to keep our eyes open.
If ye have any more information on this orc attacks, do send them in (elveng@lemming.org) to the Courant.

Cities under attack? - |
Reports are pouring in that the orcs have been spotted closer to the cities than ever before. Residents on the outskirts of the cities have said that it appears we're in for an attack within the next couple days.
Guards have been called from all over Britannia to protect the larger cities, which we hope will prevent the orcs from attempting to attack these areas.
This will be a dark time for citizens of the smaller towns, and we can only hope that by banding together, these attacks can be weathered until the true source of this uprising can be found.
Some guards will remain in the smaller towns to see that anarchy does not erupt, and that citizens will be protected from other citizens. Stealing from and attacking other players in town unlawfully will still bring the ire of the town guards. However, these remaining guards will be too sparse to defend the town against orc attacks.

Spring Fest Report - |
Excitement hung in the air as the crowds gathered in and around the famed town of Spiritwood, a-buzz with expectation over the most highly anticipated event in weeks, the Spiritwood Spring Festival.
By the time the appointed hour had rolled around, it was standing room only in Ye Old Spiritwood Tavern, the eager crowd drinking, chatting with old friends, making new ones and purchasing those all important keys that would allow them to enter the Big Event, the 500,000 gold piece Lottery. Finally, in a flurry of last minute preparations, the first contest began, the Russian Roulette Rune Raffle hosted by Beneviste of the Custodes Fati. Anxious participants were invited to buy mystery runes from a nearby vendor, some of which lead nowhere, others of which lead to places most horrid, and others still to scenic vistas across the realm. Only one lucky chancer was able to purchase the all-important grand prize rune, one that lead directly to a check for 100,000 gold pieces, truly a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow! The lucky fellow was none other than Aaron Ravenheart, well-known figure around town and likely now to be top of everyone’s list for free drinks!
The second event was even then in its final stages of preparation, the great Destard Mountain Horse Race brought to you by Gui Zarith and the warriors of the Custodes. A huge number of participants crowded round the starting line, eager to hear the instructions for a course that would take them on a perilous mad dash round some of the vilest wilderness of Sossaria, including way-station stops along the route where they were instructed to gather a set of key words and co-ordinates from helpers located at each, thus ensuring that each rider had completed the entire hazardous circuit. Despite some mishaps along the way including attacks on the brave way-station volunteers, we saw the race completed and one lucky fellow pulled up to a breathless screeching halt before the Spiritwood Town Hall with a complete set of words within his entry book. Thus Steveo of the Seekers of Light guild was overjoyed to learn that he was indeed first across the line and would be collecting his prize of 100,000 Gold pieces! Congratulations Steveo!
Still the town was packed with revellers and they now made their hasty way over to the roof top terrace of the tower of the Custodes Fati for the grand costume ball, the theme of which was “Come as a Famous Person”. The judges were nearly at a loss when they saw both the shear number and dedication of the participants, resplendent in an eye-popping range of finery. There were many examples of celebrants dressed as members of the community, others arrayed as figures from history or legend, and at least three eager Rilla Takhista look-alikes including the old mage Mythradin in his full white beard! Finally, the judges settled for Grathen as Lord Birtish’s Town Crier warning us each time the word news was mentioned that “Orc lords have been rumoured to be preparing their kin for invasion”.
Next up was the Big Event itself, the long anticipated return of the famed Spiritwood Tavern Lottery, this time with an extra special grand prize of 500,000 pieces of gold! The Tavern was packed as patrons elbowed their way to the bar to register their lucky numbers. Tension hung in the air with each roll of the dice. Dozens of participants gasped as each number appeared, some exhaled, others ripping up their tickets in frustration. But lo- after the dice had been rolled four times and four numbers selected, the harried staff of the tavern huddled together to study their lists only to discover that fate had played a spine-tingling trick on all, for there were NO winners! Hastily, the dice were prepared and the rolls re-commenced. Anxious gamblers gathered up the torn scraps of their tickets and pieced them back together once again in anticipation of the final four. And then they came, one by one, until at last a four-digit code was revealed and this time two lucky souls were pronounced winners, splitting the jackpot evenly betwixt themselves. Thus it was that Shavourous Dire and an odd fellow by the name of UfstO were the happy recipients of 250,000 gold each! Our hearty congratulations to you both.
It was then that the final surprise of the evening was sprung, for stepping out from the back room of the Tavern for a special guest appearance was none other than Fenris the Ranger himself, legendary founder of the Spiritwood Tavern, accompanied by Aranlindale, the much beloved and recently departed manager of the tavern and stalwart of Spirtiwood. The crowd blinked in disbelief before calling out a cacophony of salutations to the famous duo. And thus it was, that the Spiritwood Spring Festival drew to a happy close, reaffirming yet again that we, the shared community of Sossaria are greater than the sum of its parts.
Special thanks go to all the hard working organisers especially the Tavern Staff for their dedication and effort under extraordinary conditions. Thank you all.
Also to well known Tamer-About-Town Jen, for donating prize money for many of the preliminary events. Cheers Jen.
And a special thank you to Mark Mannion, and his Ultima Thule Traders for sponsoring the re-launch of the Spirtiwood Tavern Lottery to the tune of 500,000 gold, we applaud your generosity sir. Let it be an example to all in these difficult times.
To all of you who came, we hope you had a fine evening’s entertainment and we look forward to hosting many more such events. Let this be a spur to you all to develop similar celebrations!
Shri,
Proconsul Custodes Fati
On behalf of the Spiritwood Festival. |
