Waltz
by
Lady Elenwe Eldritch

The Waltz is one of the most known and popular dance in our world. It has always been associated with the image of Love. The grace and the complicity shown during this dance by the couple is very evocative.

The waltz is a dance in three times. This is very characteristic of it and it gives this sensation of swing to the two partners.

Although Waltz seems easy to dance, it is in fact a real challenge to stay synchronized with the partner during the numerous spins.

In this course, I have decomposed the dance in four movements that I will explain with images. And in the last part, there is the result of these movements shown by Dardan Brook and me.

When the dance is starting, there is a presentation of the two dancers. The gentleman makes a salute and the lady curtsies ( bows ). Then she makes one step to her partner and they places their hand. For the gentleman, right hand placed behind her back, left hand hanging her right hand. For the lady, left arm over his right arm, right hand hanging his left hand.

Each movement represents one bar. So I have decomposed it in three times. The two partners need to know the 4 movements. They are associated by two :
1 with 2
3 with 4

So when a partner is doing the 1st the other is doing the 2nd.

Here is the explanation of the movements.

1st movement :

1 : 90 degree turn left
One step forward

2 : 180 degree turn

3 : One step forward
90 degree turn right

2nd movement :

1 : One step forward

2 : 90 degree turn right

3 : 90 degree turn left
One step forward
180 degree turn

The 3rd and 4th movements are very specific. It is when you are in a corner of the piece. So you need to change the direction of the dance. These two movements are here for that purpose. ( this is due to the game mechanics, in fact the steps of the waltz should only be the 1st and 2nd movements but trying to make a true circle).

3rd movement : (in a corner outside the circle)

1 : 45 degree turn right

2 : no step

3 : 45 degree turn right

4th movement : (in a corner inside the circle)

1 : 90 degree turn left One step forward

2 : 135 degree turn right

3 : 45 degree turn left
One step forward
90 degree turn right

Now we have an example of dance by two dancers. I hope it will help to understand how it works.
