Chapter III: A sign of Hope

Alexandra was resting in the back of the Owl's Eye when a very distressed Long John ran in screaming that, the Orcs had come for Pad! The fog of sleep quickly dissipated from Alexandra's mind and grabbing his halberd he ran towards the battle noises. As he left the tavern he saw Pad surrounded by about four orcs. Fortunately with Pad, the orcs had more than they bargained for and Alexandra only managed to dispatch one of the foul beasts before Pad had polished the rest off.

The two men stood grinning at each other and then Pad offered to buy Alexandra an ale. As they sipped their cold ales and savoured the delights of Marcus' cooking, Alexandra told Pad about his sister. Pad was troubled to hear of the news, but he informed Alexandra that recently a young girl called Ivy had turned up in Spiritwood and she apparently had lost her memory. For a moment, hope flared up within Alexandra, could this lost girl be his sister? There was only one way to find out. Taking their leave of Marcus and his fine food, they left the Owl's Eye and using Pad's magic they quickly found themselves within the confines of fair Spiritwood. Pad led Alexandra down towards the tavern. As they rode up to the tavern, Alexandra could hear the bustle from within. The two men left their steeds outside and hurried into the warmth offered by Fenris' fine establishment.

Pad briefly talked to some of his friends, and then he led Alexandra over to a table where a young girl was sat. As he set eyes upon her, Alex knew she was not his sister, but he could still see a very frightened young girl sitting opposite him. Ivy blinked at the two men as they sat down and whimpered a little. Pad tried to console her as best he could. Alex could see she was literally shaking from fear. There was a bandage around the young girls neck, which from experience, Alex knew was an ominous sign.

Pad explained that Spiritwood was suffering from an attack not seen before. People were being possessed by the spirits of vampires. Alexandra had not heard of such a thing before. Pad asked him if he knew of anyone who might be able to help with this problem. Only one name came to Alexandra, which was of course that of his wise elven friend Elv'eng. Pad had already been in contact with the Elf, but even Elv'eng was unable to help him despite his best efforts. As they talked, a man dressed in black came to the table, and Ivy dived under the table where she hid from him. The man would leave and come back, and each time the same thing would happen. Alexandra was quite short with the fellow and told him to stay away since he was obviously scaring the poor girl.

Alexandra stayed for a while and tried to calm the girl down along with Pad and Jekall. They had some success as the night went on. As it grew later, Alexandra took his leave, and thanked Pad for bringing him to meet Ivy. The trip had not been a waste, a possibility had been discounted, but now Alexandra was worried that maybe a similar fate had befallen Tara.

It was not until the next day sitting in the Owl's Eye with Videric that he realised that maybe, the hand writing on the note was that of a possessed Tara. Pad had also mentioned that there was a book somewhere, which was connected with Tizumat which might yield some clues about Ivy's condition. Maybe it was time to pay Valdemar's minions a visit.
