Seers leave UO -- Volunteer program in crisis! -Melissa

Well, not exactly in crisis, but there are some strange happenings going on right now.

A group of Seers were kicked out of the volunteer program by OSI, which in turn caused several other Seers to resign from the program as a gesture of support towards their fired fellows. Apparently these events are at least in part related to the "Volunteer names in purple" update.

Lum's site has some good links, articles and a discussion thread concerning these events, including some commentary from Calandryll.

A wild rumour -Melissa

Stories of new weapons are spreading like wildfire, and apparently these are not mere rumours. New enchantments, such as ogre bashing and blood drinking have been found at least on the North American shards.

I don't know whether these weapons can be found on Europa or not, so any information is welcomed. I know I shall be looking for them tonight...

[New info: Melantus (UO's Online Community Coordinator) said on the UO message boards that there won't be any official announcement regarding the new weapons or their powers, because they want players to discover these things themselves. I guess that's a good thing.]

Mini-publish -Melissa

A server side mini-publish was released on Wednesday, but it seems that the vendor change isn't active yet.
Here's the complete info from UO.COM:

Publish Update
We will be publishing several changes to the shards on Wednesday, July 26th. This publish will be active on all shards following their next scheduled maintenance period, or downtime.

The changes updated in this publish include:
Purple names for all OSI volunteers (including counselors and seers). Official OSI volunteers will now appear with purple names, allowing you to recognize them as volunteers without requiring that you look at their paperdolls or clothing. This change will not affect companion names.

Item weight limits removed from vendors. We will be updating monitoring systems for vendors and, as part of this change, will be removing the item weight limits from vendors.

The changes will be added to Latest Game Updates once the publish is active on all shards.

The tales of the traveller is highlighted at UO-Europe under the people section.

Fraction system -Equerdo

*puts a toothpicker between his eyelid* Well the meeting is over and I am very tired. I had to get up at 5:30 am this morning to say goodbye to my guests. When I turned my computer on after the goodbyes the following came to my attention:

The fraction system test shard is now up and running. I suggest we all create a character there to test the system and report any bugs we can find to OSI, so that the system can be implemented as soon as possible.

Back from Amsterdam -Videric

The meeting in Amsterdam was a big success and at least I had a very great time. Thanks again to Bella for hosting the event.

I will have some reports and pics after I get a bit more settled at home again. *grins*

House placement -Equerdo

Well house placement phase 2 is over and I have to say things went rather smooth. Even though most of us got warped several times, and the lag was almost unbareable, the system worked and it was fair to all of us. Altough I, like many, had to place a Log cabin due to the lack of tower spots, most of the people that tried to place a house finally got one. We can safely go to the meeting this weekend without the fear of ending up without a house, unless ofcourse they will reset the shard. *smiles grimly*

Guildboss 1.10 now avaible! -Equerdo

Happy news for all the guildleaders out there. Guildboss version 1.10 is now avaible from Guildboss.com

July 20, Thursday

In testing upgraded -Equerdo

The following was posted uo.com.

The circumstances under which lockdowns may be “used” will be updated with the following changes:

  • Resources that are used by ‘targeting’ will no longer be useable when locked down. These items include ingots, boards, logs, and shafts.
  • All items that are locked down will be useable only by the owner, co-owner, or friends of the house in which they are locked down, the only exception being that items which have another locked down item on top of them will not be able to be used, or released until the item above them is released.
  • Items which can be used by visitors when locked down are:
    • Purple Books will only be able to be read from when locked down. All others will be able to be edited by visitors.
    • Runebooks will allow visitors to add recall scrolls to them, otherwise they will work as before.
    • Visitors will be able to use locked down dyes in a house.
    • Visitors will be able to use locked down dye tubs is a house. Dye tubs must be unlocked before the color of the dye can be changed.
    • It will no longer be possible to lock down a “stacked” item unless all items beneath it are locked down. Additionally, it will no longer be possible to lock dow “valueless” items such as new player clothing and resurrection robes.

The following items were added to Fixes and Changes

  • Haven zoning will be changed to prevent players from being able to sail near haven. Players will no longer be ejected from their boats if they sail too close to Haven.
  • Stablemasters will be able to stable only two creatures per character, per shard.

They are also going to implement new looting rights. More information about that can be found at the above url.

It seems they are removing the perfect tool for hanging items at your walls. Let us hope they will soon implement more craftable objects that can be hung to a wall.

Spiritwood Festival -Equerdo

Yesterday at the townhall in Spiritwood we had the pleasure of watching several performances. I myself found a good seat in the front row. The first performance I saw, and unfortunatly the last one that night for me, was done by a very good singer accompanied by a bard who played the harp. She sang a long nice poëm and when she was finished the crowd seemed under a spell. The spell was of this magnitude that we could not get our hands to stop clapping.
I had to leave because of urgent business elsewhere so I was not able to see the other great things that, I am sure, have happened at the festival. I would be interested in a full report of the festival including several drawing that I may post here. Those who are interested can send it to the above e-mail adress.

Too early celebration -Videric

A new reporter joins the team -Equerdo

Greetings...

I am Equerdo and I am proud to inform you that I will be helping the other reporters of "The tales of a traveler" in updating the news section.

What can you expect from me? Well I will provide you with up to date news about everything that is going on in Ultima land. Perhaps even provide you with a little rant now and again.

If you have anything you consider news you can ofcourse send it to me or anyone else on the team. *smiles*

Equerdo

ps. If you got robbed by me in the past I am sorry. *tries to look ashamed*

Vendor Customization -Videric

Interesting update:

    Vendor Customization
Double-clicking a vendor you own will now bring up a window offering two options: "Customize" and "See Goods". Selecting "See Goods" will display the contents of the vendor backpack. Selecting the "Customize" option will open a menu system through which you may customize your vendor. Customization options will include:

  • Clothing Style (for shirts, hats, pants, etc.)
  • Hair Style and Facial Hair (if any)
  • Hand Held Items (such as fishing poles or spellbooks)
  • Clothing Color
  • Vendor Name
  • Vendor Gender
  • Vendor Greeting (allowing you to personalize the way your vendor
    speaks to customers)

If you are not the owner of the vendor, double-clicking it will open the vendor's backpack.

This all sounds good to me, although allowing change the name of the vendor might be a mistake... I do not want to buy stuff from LL Cooolio or something. Can we get more furniture next?

Testing for next update

Ultima Worlds Online: Origin - new movie -Videric

The offical site seems to have a new short (about 1 meg) demo about fighting animation. It basicly only shows some different combat moves, but it is worth checking out if you have time. The site has some other small updates as well, so check it out.

About housing -Videric

Great news, Europian housing won't go in next week, so all the people taking part of the Europian player meeting in Amsterdam can breath in relieve. Many thanks goes to Origin, if they took note about the meeting and scheduled the Europian housing to fit that.

You can read next weeks housing plans here:

Interview with Fenris and Moving picture guide -Videric

A lot of updates today again, it seems. First there is interview with Fenris, man who probably has the most famous tavern on Europa shard right now. And there is the Moving picture guide that is a long list of all fantasy or loosely medieval (or earlier) based movies. Feel free to send me email if there is movies missing from that list in your opinion.

Greetings from a new reporter -Melissa

Hail to thee all,

as a recent addition to the Traveller team, I'll be reporting the news Videric fails to notice. And perhaps some other things as well. If there's any UO-related news or anything else you want me to know about, feel free to send an e-mail.
In-game you'll most likely find me from somewhere around Deepwater.

Be seeing thee!

Internet harashers (comedy) -Videric

I stumbled upon this joke when I was checking my old emails. It been ages since I got this, but the matter seems never go old. So next time when you meet those internet "jerks", think about if they really are mean or purpose or just like this guy:

I hope it brings a smile to your face *grins*

Name generators -Videric

Special thanks goes to Maelwyn of Baja for letting us know about two good random name generator sites. So if you are still having trouble with your characters name, these pages can help you to find a solution. The links have been added at the naming guide page.

Gold Sinks and Rare Items -Videric

This is an interesting post I picked up at COB.

    by Alaya
First of all, the Rare Market needs to be tossed on its heals. Remove the server uptime spawn of Rares. This only helps players who dont have to work. Rares should spawn at different times throughout the day. This will stop the Rare Campers. Kind of sickening to think people get rich just because they are fortunate to be not working.

Second, Now that Houses are 1 House per account, gold will soon become a major problem. Instead of limiting the number of Gold and Magic
items found on monsters, Keep it the same. Maybe drop the amount of gold by 90% on monsters in Felucca. They like PVP anyway. Dont need
monsters there. :) Im being Silly here. Back to the point. Add Antique Dealers that Sell Different Rares. Who would it hurt if Marble Tables were sold for 3 mill. Big Deal. This would suck up some of the gold. New Statues could come out and other Art Work.

    Just my two cents.

Here is the link to original:
Gold Sinks and Rare Items

Comments:
The interesting ideas here concern rares. Random spawining rares, and rare sellers would not be a bad idea. With billions of gold pieces in people's bank boxes and nothing to spent it on, this would be one of the solutions perhaps.

I am also for it because I like house decorating, and I wish some items would be released as normal craftables, but some rare looking items could as well be used as money sinks...

North American Shards - Housing Update -Videric

It seems that last of North American shards are finally going to be updated.

UO: What's new

However because of the coming Amsterdam meeting at 22-23rd weekend, I am at least scared. If Europa shard housing comes on THAT weekend of all the weekends... the meeting we all been waiting for might be under unhappy clouds, or even fail at some part. It is meetnig of Ultima Online fans after all. So it is my hope that Origin would be so kind and to schedule it on that weekend.

If all goes well start next Monday, or something... Not at the end of that week...please.

Stratics Origin screenshot -Videric

Seems like Origin gave Stratics a new UWO:O screenshot. Have a look at it at:

Origin Stratics

Short Comment:
Looks lie yet another side of the Temple of Virtues in Britain. This time with a close shot of Meer male. Looks like male cats do not have lion main, or anything like that. Oh well, I do not like cats so much anyway... (yeah, not planning to play as Meer. Me like humies better).

The naming guide -Videric

I had accidently forgot to upload the latest version of the naming guide, as I updated the site with dozen new things it slipped somehow. My apologies for the mistake, the naming guide is now correctly updated.

As a bonus, I added two surname links (that I just found) to the naming guide page.

The Malevolence, Evil in Ultima -Videric

This was posted in UWOO@egroups.com by Ahriman, a while ago, but because of work redesign Traveller required, I am a bit late in news field.

Those who have not still finished Ultima 9 yet, might want the skip the following as it contains a spoiler about the Guardian.

The sinister power discovered by the ancient Meer Lore Council just prior to their cataclysm would eventually become known as the Malevolence. This foul presence, which would eventually give birth to necromancy, is the dark force that Adranath serves. The Shadow Lords were avatars of the Malevolence, and it was they who corrupted Blackthorn in the single-player Ultima games. When the Avatar rejected his "dark side" (or the part of himself that was being influenced by the Malevolence), the Guardian was created - yet another servant of the Malevolence.

Lord British developed the system of the Virtues, which were designed to serve the forces of light. The followers of the Malevolence would also develop a philosophy - a twisted version of the Virtues which would come to be known as the Anti-Virtues. I think it was that dark philosophy that Knight was referring to when he used the term, "Dread."

My Comments:
It seems all loose ends of Ultima's 1-9 are tied to UWO:O somehow. Although I love details in fiction myself, I am not sure of the great evil. Somehow I do not see Guardian as servant of anyone, he is the evil of Ultimas (I did not like U9 "truth" about Guardian either). Besides Guardian has THE most greatest villain voice.

Listen a bit, and agree. Audio clip of Guardians speech or this Another audio clip of Guardians speech.

However there is much hope for this new evil, as this evil has not been introduced before one could develop a great plot element of the mystery about this entity. I hope the possibilities of this villain are not wasted, like they are with Minax (so far at least). I really hope that this new entity would just be something that drives it's own goals rather than just being evil. What I mean is, you do not attract followers by saying: "I am EVIL follow me!" No, you would give promises of wealth and glory, if one follow the cause. Something like Fellowship of Ultima 7 would be in order, perhaps?

What I like is that it seems there will be a lot of sides, and daties in next Ultima. The fiction development of Origin gives us Frozen Lord British, crippled Blackthorn, Juka, Meer, Overloards, the Malevolence and of course the Virtues. These all give good basics for sides and even for religions (I bet there will be a group waiting Lord British's return).

Finally, make sure that if there is any audio for the great evil that you use as sinister voice as Bill Johnson (Guardian's voice actor) or even his voice again. What would have Darth Vader been without his voice? *grins evilly*

If you have something to add, why not use the board to voice them?
You can comment to this post in replying to the following post: The Malevolence, Evil in Ultima

The Tales of a Traveller has been updated a lot lately... -Videric

Firstly the site has gone over some changes, making the site easier to access and a bit faster to load.
Hopefully you like it.

New features:

Reports:
This section will have reports and interviews of different persons related to roleplaying in Ultima. For the
first interview The Tales of a Traveller was fortunate to have Ogodei, one of the founder members of
ERPA (Europian Role-Players Association) and guild master of Oymak Batachikan.

Naming guide:
Ever had trouble determining a name for your character? No worries, the updated The Tales of a Traveller
naming guide has over 300 names for females and male characters fitting to Ultima Universe.

New Society section:
Runic and Gargoyle language, songs, dances, section of historical characters (including seer characters),
about historical events of Britannia and more...

Archives:
The Tales of a Traveller goes back in time and is broud to present The Hope newspapers archives from
year 1998. The Hope was the only indenpendent in-character news source at Atlantic -shard (as far as I
know at aleast). The Archives introduces a recap of the first huge player event called the Midwinter Ball.
The event had such known names as Lord Faust Whitefist, Hulkster and Seer Little. You can also find
notes about the Zog Cabal, Trinsic feasts and mysterious even surrounded Hungry Halfling Tavern.
