 | Stratics Interviews Stellerex -Videric | |
This one has number "2" as far I can tell. Also the interview included some interesting facts:
Are there any plans to make new housing areas available? This is under discussion right now. There are a number of technical hurdles that would have to be overcome in order to accomplish it, so we have to determine the technical feasibility before committing to a plan.
Entire interview can be read here: UO Stratics |
 | Stratics interviews Prophet and Evocare, but forgets 2? -Videric | |
If you wonder what the topic means, do read this interview. It seems all but one number "2" been sensored from the log. Please do not ask me why, I cannot explain.
Example where the only "2" in the interview is shown, but later ones are missing:
Gilthas - Go ahead Terry Terry - hmmm * Gilthas whispers "The one about UO2" * Gilthas - Terry? Terry - I have noticed alot of (previously) UO content lately in UO (ie. ridgebacks, golems, etc.) I was wondering how much more we will see in the future? Evocare|OSI - We'll continue to use what UO art assets we can, but the game engine itself was so drastically different from that of UO, it's not possible for us to simply switch UO over to using much beyond some of the art. Terry - I heard that earlier too =)
OR
Gilthas - Go ahead, Barrackas Barrackas - Hi Evocare|OSI - howdy =] Barrackas - Will the D client be getting any new static art at all with LBR, or even after that? Evocare|OSI - the d client is definitely getting new art in the form of new creatures Evocare|OSI - they won't be hued versions of current creatures. Evocare|OSI - technically, all art on the d client is static since we can't patch it... so hopefully that answers your question. Prophet - [plug] And they kick ass!]/plug] Gilthas - Cheater. Barrackas - Well, more specifically I meant things in the art.mul file, but ok :) Gilthas - Anything to add, Barrackas? Gilthas - Guess that's a "No" =) Prophet - Generally we get asked for new monsters so we focused our energy in that area. Prophet - Not much demand for new statics :(
Indeed, it does not make much sense if you do not add some "2" somewhere. Dunno if any Stratic reporter reads this, but if one does, do tell me the story behind this one.

Alai had this to say:
As I sit here in my office, listening to the whirring of my computers, a smile is inching across my face. Every time I get a spare moment to think about what’s coming up for UO I get all a-tingle again. This is no small feat, as I’ve been working on it for three and a half years now. I’ve survived T2A, Renaissance, and Third Dawn – I am a seasoned veteran. Nothing should faze me anymore, and there certainly shouldn’t be anything I could get excited over. Right?
Well, I’m excited. The upcoming releases are going to knock your socks off. We’re going full-bore with content, new models, new spell effects, new sprites for the 2D players, new audio… a lot of stuff. Tack onto that the huge leaps and bounds we’re making in improving the clients and I am simply astounded. Of course, the client is where most of my interest lies – being the Lead Client Programmer now, so that is where I shall focus my thoughts.
The upcoming client patches are going to have lots of goodies for the 3D client, somewhat less so for the 2D client. I should note that this is not because we have less interest in the 2D client, but because the 3D client has greater potential – and has a greater need for improvement. I decided this “Comments” post would serve mostly to share my excitement with the rest of you, so I’ll just delve into what we’ll be releasing “soon”:
- We have taken an initiative to wipe out the bugs in the Party System and started with the clients. The Party System will be more stable and pleasant to deal with than ever.
- Several aesthetic improvements will be coming to the Third Dawn client soon. This includes mip-mapping to reduce “noise” in textures, a fix for a problem with alpha maps on the wings of dragons and the like, as well as some fancy text rendering code. These changes result in a greatly superior looking Third Dawn client.
- Our 2D client is getting a “Quick Menu” of its own.
- The Third Dawn client is getting support for more fonts. Different fonts will be used all over the interface, and can also be selected by the player for in-game chat.
- Both clients are getting a new interface for acquiring help and information regarding playing Ultima Online. This will be a searchable, cross-indexed font of useful information players can access in the game. This system will launch with a less than complete data set, but we’ll be filling it in rapidly.
- The ability to switch from full screen mode and back again in real time has been added to the Third Dawn client. Players can also resize their Third Dawn client window as big as they like – limited only by the ability of their video card.
- We have also added several performance enhancements to the Third Dawn client. The overall frame rate is up, and zooming in your view will yield an even greater frame rate – very useful at banks.
- Players will soon benefit from indicators on the Shard Selection screen of both clients which will relate the amount of latency and packet loss between them and the Ultima Online shards.
All this, and more which I’m going to keep under my hat for the time being! The client is slowly undergoing a progressive overhaul to create a more stable, faster game-playing environment. This is due to all the people who work on the client: Greyburn, BulldoZ, Indy, Jalek, FierY iCe, and myself (Alai). That’s a lot of people working hard to improve the quality of just the client alone, with more on the server. Ultima Online has a long, glorious future ahead of it. I hope you stay with us – or you’ll miss the best of it!
Special Addition:
Every time I check up on the boards, I see at least one post where somebody could use a quick review of some of the special interface features of the Third Dawn client. So here it is:
- If you can’t click on something because it’s too small, or buried under other objects, press and hold Shift and Ctrl down to bring up “Object Handles.” You can drag/click/target these things like you could the actual object. If one Object Handle is obscuring the one you’re after, right click on it to get rid of it and dig your way to the item you were looking for.
- If you hold down Shift when you drag a stack of items, it will pick up the WHOLE stack without being prompted about how many you want.
- Similarly, if you hold down Alt and Shift when you drag a stack of items, you’ll only pick up one.
- The Third Dawn client has a command history. Assuming you haven’t remapped the macro, you can press Alt-Up and Alt-Down to cycle through commands you’ve used recently. If you prefer to use different keys for this, create some new macros that use “PrevCommand” and “NextCommand.”
- When shopping in the Third Dawn client, you can buy the maximum quantity of an item by holding down the Shift key and double-clicking on its listing in the shopping gump instead of sitting there holding down the little “+” button.
- Open up your options display and switch to the macro editing section in the Third Dawn client. See that gray rectangle to the right of the key entry field? Drag that off the gump and put it on your desktop. You can double-click that icon whenever you want to use that macro. This is especially useful for using skills. You can also re-label that icon by changing the text in the “Name” field of the macro-editing screen before you drag it off.
- You can create a “Command” macro in the Third Dawn client to execute any command you could enter into the main input field. This includes gestures - just create a Command macro with the parameter `bow. Note: that’s the single quote key on the tilde (~) button. Now drag off the macro icon….
- The four small boxes to the left of the paperdoll are used to equip and remove small articles of equipment in the ring, necklace, wrist, and ear slots.
If you stick several status bars, spell icons, or macro icons together, you can drag the whole mess of them around at once if you hold the Shift key while you do it. Alai Lead Client Programmer Ultima Online
What is Mip-mapping you say? This is what Nvidia says about it:
MIP Mapping A technique to improve graphics performance by generating and storing multiple versions of the original texture image, each with different levels of detail. The graphics processor chooses a different MIP map based on how large the object is on the screen, so that low-detail textures can be used on objects that contain only a few pixels and high-detail textures can be used on larger objects where the user will actually see the difference. This technique saves memory bandwidth and enhances performance.

 | More on taxcollecting Role-play -Videric | |
Few important new points about the situation:
So I followed up today on this, and have some answers in regard to the role-playing concerns that were raised.
It is currently acceptable for an individual or group to role-play as part of the King's government/hierarchy. However, as always, players may not mislead others into thinking that they are representatives of OSI or EA.
Some examples of what are acceptable would be: role-playing a cook who works in Castle British, a paladin who fights for the Honor of his King, a Mayor of one of the NPC cities which are part of Britannia, a royal librarian, and a True Britannian General who serves the Britannian Nobility.
Some examples of what would be unacceptable would be: pretending to be Lord British, Lord Blackthorn, Dupre, or any of the famous Companions or characters which have been central to Ultima fiction. Going off topic somewhat, it would also be completely unacceptable to pretend to be a member of the Dev, Programming, or Event teams. It's also unacceptable to allow other people to think you are acting in behalf of the real people who are associated with those characters or positions.
By itself, claiming to be a part of the Britannian government is fine, as long as you don't directly link yourself to an OSI-related character or staffmember.
To specifically address this case, it is acceptable to portray yourself as a tax collector, and working for the Court of Britannia, as long as you don't say, imply, or allow to be inferred that you are under "direct orders" from a (past, present, or future) OSI-related character or staffmember, such as Lord British (or Lord Blackthorn, or Nystul, etc.).
I hope this new information helps.

Thank you, thank you, and thank you! We really appreciate you looking into it further. That is most excellent news!
So our story is we are collecting taxes to prepare for the return of Lord British and as long as we don't say we are under direct orders we are ok?!
And someone's correlation to our plot to that of Prince John during King Richard the Lionheart's rule in the age of Robin Hood, you are exactly correct! -----------------------------------------------------
What if you, instead of mentioning anyone's name, said you were collecting for "the King"? Or, more generically, for "the Court of Britannia"? Or, more elaborately, something with your guildmaster's name like "Halt, peasant! I demand your taxes, by order of Lord Smith, Sheriff of Cove, duly-appointed by the Court of Britannia!" but, of course, substituting Smith with the name of your guildmaster and Cove with the city of your choice. :}
So you may not say that Lord British directly commanded you to take gold from peasants, but you may say that you "work" for the royal court, if I understand correctly.
Although I would presume stating most anything would not cause problem if it is done with role-players and not to strangers, and of course is within limits of good taste. |

Augur commented about the last coming phase of the current scenario:
Greetings! Prepare yourself for another longwinded message from Augur!
As the Finale of the Gargoyle Scenario is rapidly approaching, I’d like to take some time now to shed some light on how we have constructed this Finale in order to address some of the player concerns raised during the Finale of the Savage Empire Scenario. I will also be explaining how the Gargoyle Finale functions in some manner, in order to prepare everyone so that they can better understand what is going on as the Finale runs its course.
I won’t be explaining the fictional aspects of the Gargoyle Finale nor how it specifically plays out in game, only how the system “behind the scenes” functions. So there is no need to worry about this message spoiling the Gargoyle Scenario Finale for you – I’m actually here to help you better understand how it will function!
The main issue that we are attempting to address with the Gargoyle Finale is the issue of some players feeling that they were unable to be fully involved in the previous Scenario’s Finale because of time restrictions. We are attempting to rectify this situation in two discrete ways :
THE FINALE BEGINS AT PEAK SERVER TIME
First, we will be manually starting the Gargoyle Scenario Finale on each shard at approximately 7 PM Local Server Time. What this means is that, when the server first comes up from maintenance with the Finale code on it, players won’t actually be able to start the Finale. Everyone will have to wait until we manually turn the Finale on later that night. This means that players that may have work, school, or other commitments throughout the day will not have to worry about early morning players finishing a section of the Finale before they have a chance to help.
An important caveat to all this is that the Bartenders will, unfortunately, be barking text that makes it appear that players can begin the Finale right when the server comes up, when they, in fact, will need to wait for the appearance of what the Bartender is barking about.
This possibly confusing action occurs because of how the Bartenders were initially set up, and the fact that we had to choose the Bartender text for localization long before we finished up how the Finale System was going to function. The Bartenders will be reporting a call for help, but the person in need of assistance will not appear until he is manually activated by the Scenario Team at 7 PM Local Server Time.
THE FINALE TAKES PLACE OVER MULTIPLE DAYS
The second issue players expressed about the previous Scenario Finale that we are attempting to address in the Gargoyle Scenario Finale is the short timespan of the Savage Empire Finale. While there were issues with the Savage Empire Finale on live shards that caused it to be easier than we had intended, nevertheless, it was most likely not difficult enough (and, thusly, not long enough) in the first place.
The Gargoyle Scenario Finale, however, will take place over multiple days. This timespan is forced by the Finale System, so that we are ensured, no matter the pace of a particular shard’s valiant population, that the Scenario will last a minimum of three days. The way in which this is achieved is by breaking up the Finale into three sections. Three Tasks must be performed in order to reach the ultimate ending of the Finale – so each Shard will effectively have three sections that players can help solve.
As each Task is a full step on its own, we hope that this allows for players who can only play during a single day to feel that they have completed a worthwhile goal, in addition to being part of the Finale as a whole.
You’ll notice, however, that I mentioned that the Gargoyle Finale will take place over a minimum of three days. In fact, the Gargoyle Scenario Finale may take several more days (or weeks, or months, or however long it takes a shard) to complete. The system behind how this part of the Finale functions is what I’d like to more fully explain to everyone, so that they don’t become confused or waste time waiting around when they have finished their Task for a certain section.
The Gargoyle Finale code works like this :
When we first start the Gargoyle Finale manually at 7PM Local Server Time, the Finale Code marks the current time as its “Beginning Time”, and then begins a clock system that checks the time every hour to see if it’s been 24 hours since the Beginning Time.
When 24 hours have elapsed (i.e. it is ~7PM Local Server Time of the next day), the Finale Code checks if the current step of the Finale has been completed by the players.
If the 24 hour countdown finishes and the current step has been completed, then the Finale Code starts up the next step. If the 24 hour countdown finishes and the current step is not completed, then the Finale Code starts counting another 24 hours before it can check for completion again.
It is important to note, however, that because of “lost time” during Server Downtimes, this check may be performed anywhere between 7PM to 8PM Local Server Time after we manually start the first step. No matter how long a Server is down, however, the check will never be made any earlier than 7PM nor any later than 8PM
What all this confusing time talk means to you as a player, is that you can always be ensured of being able to hop in the game at 7PM-8PM to take part in the next step of the Gargoyle Finale (if the previous step has been completed, that is! )
But what if your shard finishes a step at 8:05PM, just five minutes after the timer counted down for your shard? Will you still have to wait until the next day for the next step to become available? The simple answer is : Yes, you most certainly will!
If your shard finishes a step of the Finale after the 24 Hour timer has elapsed, you’ll have to wait until the next day for the Finale System to start up your shard’s next step.
The reason behind this 24 hour forced wait is that we want to make sure that everyone at least has a chance to hop in and check out each step of the Finale. This means you’ll always have to wait until 7PM-8PM for a step to begin – but this also means you’re always ensured that you won’t miss the start of a step if you log in during this time frame.
As a final note regarding the Finale, it’s important to note that there will be sections of the Gargoyle Finale that take place in Trammel and Felucca, as well as in Ilshenar. While we realize that all players may not be able to access the Ilshenar lands, we feel that we have included enough of the Gargoyle Finale in both Trammel and Felucca in order to ensure that no one feels left out of the Finale as a whole.
There’s plenty of fun and “ooo! Aah!” factor to be found in the Trammel and Felucca sections of the Finale – a large enough portion of the Finale that I don’t think anyone will ultimately be disappointed. Not to mention the fact that successful completion of the Scenario’s Finale will provide rewards for players of all facets!
I hope this message has helped clear up some of the concerns players have about the Gargoyle Scenario’s Finale, and will also function as a guide to what you can expect when the Finale starts on your shard.
Until that time, this is Augur, finally shutting up.
And
Woops! I forgot to include the fact that, yes, there will be an NPC that will keep players updated with their progress through the Finale.
Speaking to the NPC (who will be the player's first introduction to the tasks) will give the current state of what's going on, and it's automatically updated as the Finale progresses, with new information on what, in general, to do next.

 | Illegal to role-play Tax collector? -Videric | |
Although Tax collector is very scary figure, the problem is not related to this matter. More of role-playing messanger of Lord British and forcing RP over non Rpers. Here is the statement and Sannio's reply to subject:
Ok, I didn't get any private message why my post was deleted, and someone mentioned over ICQ it's because I posted pictures with the GM's name.
In that case, I'll try to make it a bit less obstructive.
On Atlantic Felucca is a guild called "TAX".
This is the TAX FAQ :
TAX - FAQ
Since the absence of Lord Britain in Sosaria, the people of the lands have been growing fat and rich off the profits and desecrating all around them without heed of the damage they have done! They have robbed the land of the greenery it once had!
We of the Royal Tax Collectors are all that remains of the old law requiring that all citizens pay a 10% sales tax for any purchase or trade!
Having re-established ourselves, we are now reinforcing these laws by taking the 10% and more when deemed necessary from the citizens of this poor land!
It is our intention to rebuild this land, bring the life back to the foliage, clear the waters of the bile, and if all that fails, to make ourselves filthy rich once again.
OOC
Who we are: We are thieves, looters and other houligans that demand taxes from the citizens of Sosaria in whatever form deemed necessary. We are also mature, we are not of the elite that run around and just irritate. We have a purpose and it is our job to enusre that it is carried out.
Where are we: The Royal Tax Collectors main office is located just North of Trinsic. It is a tower named as the TAX HQ.
What we do: We steal, loot, block, run, hide stealth, whatever it takes to successfully collect the taxes owed. We also enjoy playing in groups and doing events.
What are the requirements?: There really are none. We expect you to help your guildmates, not take from them and spread the word of our mission whenever possible.
How do I contact you?: Cleome Arachnid is the GM of TAX and can be contacted via pigeon (ICQ) at 59667113.
Is this affiliated with Scoundrel's Cove, AAR, S|S, or the Legitimate Businessman's Social Club? No. Though Jelly is a responsible party in each of those guilds, this is an entirely different idea and group of people. Though some of the others may join us, we are in no way affiliated.
Does TAX have an IRC channel? Yes, we do. It is #taxes on irc.stratics.com
Basically, TAX is a roleplaying guild that demands 'taxes' from players. They don't outright steal or kill, they make their demands - if they are ignored they take it by force.
Today, a TAX member was warned by a GM that this guild is illegal for the following reasons:
1.) They were representing themselves as Lord British Consultants. 2.) ONLY OSI Staff may claim to be in contact with Lord British himself.
Now, I'm dismayed by this GM's decision, and with the past history dealing with such things I know this is a no-win scenario. I do seriously think if this was a "GOOD" aligned guild of Paladins that claimed to be cleaning out dungeons for Lord British, this would never occur.
However, what's done is done it seems. The GM of TAX is going to write OSI to complain, and he has every right to , however I fear this complaint will fall on deaf ears.
Now - the point of this post :
I know for a fact there are guilds out there GOOD and EVIL that roleplay like TAX did. Your guilds and accounts may be in jeapordy it seems, and I am posting this information directly for you. I think it's foolish, and I know others can't believe this as well. However it doesn't matter what we think - and that's the bottom line.
-CrazyJoe
There seems to be two major issues here. The first is a real world-based, out-of-character concern, and the second is a role-playing key point, specific to Ultima Online’s Britannia. Please allow me to lend some observations into this conversation, but please keep in mind I’m at home, and no more information than what all of you have available on this subject.
The situation has apparently spun off a GM’s call in regard to a guild on the Atlantic shard, TAX, who pretend to be representatives of Lord British, specifically as tax collectors. In their own words they “steal, loot, block, run, hide stealth, whatever it takes to successfully collect the taxes owed.”
Whatever the guildmates of TAX were trying to achieve, they seemed to be presenting themselves not simply as role-playing group of tax collectors, like some derivative of the Sheriff of Nottingham out of Robin Hood, but as representatives in a stronger sense, as some kind of real-world, in-game representatives of Lord British as an extension of the real world company of OSI.
And so the question becomes: “Are they representatives of the in-game(s) character of Lord British, or the real life person who uses the alias “Lord British,” who once was a major part of Origin? And this question may be the root of the problem, and whether or not a player or player may have really had this question in mind when they made the GM call, it seems to be the situation the GM was compelled to make at the scene, regardless. I think it’s pretty safe to say that the only reason this question comes up is because the original creator of the Ultima games uses as his alias the same name as the character who was the fictional leader of the fictional game-world. The fact becomes that many players will not distinguish between Lord British as the person with the alias and Lord British the character, and we’ll always have to err on the side of caution in related concerns.
So, while that’s mostly just my perspective and insight, I hope it helps show a point of view that seems to have been skipped over by some (but not all) of the people who have posted here.
Switching tracks to the second issue, the GM is alleged to have said that Lord British is dead. Well, neither the person who uses the “Lord British” alias, nor the “Lord British” character, is dead. When we look at the recent BNN story, “Answers,” we can realize that whatever the comments the GM said in this was must be considered in (metaphorical) context. In the quote below from, “Answers,” Nystul, the royal mage, thinks to himself on the dire times at hand:
In reply to: --------------------------------------------------------
The King must have known that this would come to pass in Britannia someday. Evil such as this never dies… it only changes in appearance. It was foolish of me to think it would not crawl upon the land again. I should have made him stay longer. He left because he had to, I know, but the land aches from his absence. I only hope the people can drive back this evil without him.
---------------------------------------------------------
Where is Lord British? He’s off exploring other realms, and isn’t said to be literally dead. He simply no longer sits on the throne of Britannia.
In reply to: ---------------------------------------------------------
To the side of the throne stood Dupre, his large warrior stature imposing in the light of the candles illuminating the chamber. He seemed to stand protectively next to the royal seat, as if his King still sat there.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Later on, in that same story, Nystul reflects to himself:
In reply to: ----------------------------------------------------------
I know these men, and I can stop whatever this “Exodus” is. I only hope that once I leave to join our King, they can continue the fight without me.
------------------------------------------------------------
So role-playing certainly isn’t wrong, but in this case it goes beyond the question of role-playing a certain type of noble (such as a tax collector) and beyond references to Lord British, because this could have probably happened even if they said they were collecting taxes for the King. Not everyone in UO role-plays, and that’s fine—sometimes they’re just there to see the role-played “show.” But people shouldn’t be forced into role-playing, or confused into it, and the additional confusion of people who seem to claim that they are the in-game representatives of the Ultima creator certainly doesn’t help matters.
In a conversation I had with someone recently, it was pointed out that while I might be able to go to a renaissance faire and role-play, if I started role-playing a tax collector and people give me things in the name of the (person playing the) king, even if it wasn’t real money, I’d be kicked out pretty quickly.

We'll have a list of the new art soon I am sure. I'd rather not get into what will and what won't right now though. So far the only one I know will not get new art is the orc brute. I did see the ridgeback in 2d though. Very cool looking.

Here is a direct link to the UOHOC. It had few interesting questions in it, although answers were not always very specific.
Kehleyr - *godski* When will the dev do a polishing of the game? Things like fixing the multiple doors and objects stacked on each other as well as in TD the opjects being overlapped by the map tiles. Just an over all sweep to eliminate things that make the world less belivable. I don't think players should constantly be faced with environment glitches as it makes the world less emersive. Hanse - Each publish contains bugfixes which is what you would consider polishing. Hanse - Many of the bugfixes are listed on our website. Hanse - The double-doors is a bug we mean to address, but have had other issues pop up with higher priority. Hanse - ahem...If you find map specific bugs, please mail us at tcbugs@uo.com Hanse - or uobugs@uo.com.. :) Sannio - Please use uobugs@uo.com if you find something on a normal shard, or tcbugs@uo.com if on a test center shard.

And
You will need an upgrade registration code for each account you wish to access Ilshenar with the 2D client. This means you will need to buy a seperate retail box for each account. AFAIK there are no plans to give out freebie upgrade registration codes.
What is unclear at the time: Will the existing players be able to upgrade to the add-on with reduced/upgrade price?
